How does a pillar drill work?
Pillar drills, sometimes known as a ‘drill press machine’ or ‘pillar drill machine’, can be used on a wide range of materials and products to create accurate holes in all different sizes.
Whether you’re working with an industrial pillar drill, a bench pillar drill or a floor standing pillar drill, the method will still be the same.
The drill sits firmly against a table and is lowered into the material vertically with the use of a hand lever. The table can also be adjusted so that materials of different thicknesses and lengths can still fit in.
A pillar drill will perform a neater job that a regular handheld electric drill, you have more control over it meaning that you’re able to set the drill depth more accurately down to the nearest millimetre. You also have control over how fast the drill is operating, meaning that you can add more force for tougher materials and less force for ones that are easier to penetrate such as balsa wood.
Don’t forget to invest in a pillar drill stand for safely storing when your drill isn’t in use, as well as a pillar drill guard to protect your fingers from the drill.
