Q&A

A single Toyota Corolla 1985-1988 tailgate/boot gas strut manufactured in the UK with a 2 year warranty and new end fixings. Replaces part number(s) 68950 12110.

UK Made - not a cheap imitation from the Far East or EU.

We recommend always replacing struts as a pair to keep the force even between them - often replacing just one strut causes the older strut to fail soon after. This is because even if an old strut hasn’t totally failed, it will have lost pressure and matching it with a new strut will cause unequal forces between the two struts, side loading and premature failure of both struts.

    Replacement tailgate gas strut
Ordered these gas struts as genuine Toyota ones cost an arm and a leg. They were delivered to my door within two days which I was impressed with in a sturdy cardboard tube and well packed into it. The struts themselves are excellent and are about the exact same length as the original ones but you have to remove the ball ends from the original ones by either cutting them open or removing the small snap ring (if you can) to get the ball ends for the new ones. I then discovered I had to grind away a lot and I mean a lot of the plastic on both ends on the new strut to allow the original ball ends to swivel to allow me to mount them to the car. Anyone who has fitted them to an AE86 will know what im on about, the sides on the tail gate and the sides of the car quarter panel sit at an angle and the ball pressed into the new gas strut would only sit rigid at 90 degrees to the mounting end. The ball is very easily fitted and removed from the new gas strut with a very clever spring clip. After a bit of hassle I got them eventually fitted and aside from this the struts really open the tail gate up and hold it up, id say they are better than the original ones.
If you read this SGS Engineering, then please look into modifying the ends of the strut for the AE86. Would I buy them again? Yes most definitely, they are a quality product. I know I had an issue fitting them but the car I was fitting them to went out of production in 1987, this is 2017, the fact I can get gas struts for a 30 year old car is amazing itself so id give 10 out of 10 to SGS Engineering on these gas struts.
