    What is MIG welding?

MIG welding stands for ‘Metal Inert Gas’ welding and is one of many techniques used to weld pieces of metal together by melting them with electricity.

It’s highly favoured in its field for being a quick and easy method of welding and can be done by those new to the tool and professionals alike.

The use of the electricity from the MIG welder causes an electrical arc (commonly known as a short circuit) to be created between the electric wire and the metal that is to be welded. This causes the positive anode and a negative cathode to react.

The arc causes the electrode wire to melt which is then used as the binding material. Once it has cooled and solidified, the weld has been made.

How to use a MIG welder

When using a MIG welder ensure that you have the right protective equipment to do the job. A welding mask and gloves are recommended to avoid any burns and hot welding residue from touching your skin. This will also protect your eyes from the bright sparks that are generated by arc welding.

Inside the MIG welder will be wire and a set of rollers to push the wire out onto the welding gun. The welding gun is where you’ll find a trigger that controls the flow of electricity and the amount of wire being fed out from the welder.

Remember to take it slow and do your welding in short bursts as to not make any mistakes. Be sure to weld away from any other people and in a space away from any surfaces that could easily catch fire from sparks e.g., woods and papers.
